Rent or Buy Medical Equipment? A Simple Guide
In short: rent when you need equipment for weeks or a few months, such as recovery after surgery or care during an illness. Buy when you will need it for a long time, or when it is a small personal item like a walking stick, commode chair or adult diapers.
When renting makes sense
- The need is short-term: recovery, a hospital discharge, or care for a few months.
- The equipment is expensive to buy, like an electric hospital bed, oxygen concentrator, BiPAP or patient monitor.
- You want delivery, setup and pickup handled for you.
- You are not sure how long you will need it.
When buying makes sense
- You will need the item for many months or permanently.
- It is a personal-hygiene item, such as a commode chair or adult diapers.
- It is low-cost, such as a walking stick or walker.
Example: wheelchair
Renting a wheelchair costs ₹800 per month. A folding wheelchair to buy starts at about ₹3,800. So if you need it for more than about five months, buying usually costs less.

Large medical machines such as electric hospital beds, oxygen concentrators, BiPAP, CPAP, patient monitors, suction machines and syringe pumps are mainly rented, because they are usually needed for a limited time and need setup.
