BiPAP vs CPAP: What Is the Difference?
In short: a CPAP machine gives one steady air pressure all the time. A BiPAP machine gives two pressures: a higher one when you breathe in and a lower one when you breathe out. CPAP is most often used for obstructive sleep apnea. BiPAP is often used when a patient needs extra help to breathe, or cannot tolerate CPAP. Your doctor decides which one you need.
How CPAP works
CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The machine blows air at one set pressure through a mask. The steady pressure keeps the airway open during sleep, so breathing does not stop and start.
How BiPAP works
BiPAP (also called BPAP or bilevel) gives a higher pressure when you breathe in (IPAP) and a lower pressure when you breathe out (EPAP). Breathing out against a lower pressure feels easier, and the difference between the two pressures helps move more air in and out of the lungs.
